Choosing the right bag is half the job. The other half — and the one that decides whether the first half mattered — is choosing the supplier who will build it, test it, and stand behind it across every order for the next five years. A bag failure in transit is not a packaging problem: it is product loss, potential contamination of your own product, and liability questions that follow the supplier chain. An FIBC is a loaded lifting device holding 500–1,500 kg of your product, often for 30–45 days of ocean transit, stacked 3–4 high, lifted repeatedly by forklift or crane. Fabric is woven from polypropylene yarn, and that yarn is either virgin or contains recycled PP. Recycled content is legitimate for many applications and cheaper — but it must be disclosed, because recycled yarn has wider tensile variance, less consistent UV stability, and is generally not acceptable for food contact. A supplier who will not tell you the yarn origin is hiding something that directly affects your risk.
Audits and Line Capability
When volumes justify it (typically 50,000+ bags/year), an on-site or video audit is worth the travel:
- ISO 9001 as baseline; IFS or equivalent for food-adjacent lines.
- Sewing quality: check loop reinforcement passes, seam straightness, and bar-tack density on samples from the line, not pre-finished display bags.
- In-house testing vs third-party: a factory with its own lift/drop test rig catches problems before shipment; one without them exports them.
- Loop and spout tooling: the quality of a loop is set by the stitching and the webbing before it is sewn. Look at the raw webbing roll, not just the finished loop.
- Capacity headroom: a factory at 95% utilization for someone else’s program will be the first to slip your lead time.
Sampling and Pre-Production Approval
Before any production run, order pre-production samples on your exact specification — same gsm, same coating, same loops, same closure. Evaluate:
- Dimensional accuracy against your drawing
- Seam and loop strength (send to an independent lab if you have one)
- Coating integrity (adhesion test if PE-laminated)
- Printing registration if branded
- Fit on your own filling and discharge equipment — the bag that works in the factory photo may not work on your spout
Sign off the sample in writing before the factory releases the order. This one step eliminates the majority of “it’s not what I ordered” disputes.
Commercial Terms to Read Carefully
- MOQ: standard FIBC factories run 1,000–5,000 bag minimums; printed and custom-spec bags higher.
- Lead time: 15–30 days for standard stock specs; 30–45 for custom printing or special constructions. Confirm what the lead time includes — fabric sourcing, production, testing, and booking space.

- Payment terms: 30% deposit / 70% before shipment is the common structure; T/T, L/C, and platform-escrow options all exist. New suppliers warrant tighter terms than established ones.
- Incoterms: EXW, FOB, CIF — know which leg of the freight and which insurance you are carrying.
Logistics and Compliance
- Fumigation certificates where destination markets require them (several food-importing regions do).

- Container loading plan: bags per 20’/40’, stacking configuration, dunnage. A good supplier sends a loading diagram; it doubles as your receipt inspection checklist.

Treat any of the following as a stop signal unless the supplier can produce documentation that resolves it:
- No test report for your exact specification — only generic certificates or photos.
- Refusal to disclose yarn origin (virgin vs recycled) on request.
- Vague specifications — “high quality,” “thick fabric,” “strong loops” without gsm, SWL, or loop dimensions.
- No sampling program — “just place the order and we will make it right.”
- Price far below market — a $4 fully tested 1,000 kg bag does not exist; the difference is being removed from the bag somewhere.
- Pressure on terms — urgency, “factory is closing the line,” deposit-only with no inspection rights.
- Inconsistent communication — specs change between quote, sample, and production without sign-off.
