Premium Shellfish Packaging for Seafood Market

A Seafood Exporter, Southeast Asia
Premium Shellfish Packaging for Seafood Market

Challenge:

The exporter needed packaging that showcased the visual quality of premium shellfish while preventing physical damage during long-haul export to demanding international markets.

Solution:

We provided fine-mesh monofilament bags for retail-grade display packaging and leno mesh bags for bulk wholesale transport, creating a two-tier solution covering both market channels.

Result:

Product damage rate during transit dropped from 8% to 1%, enabling the exporter to achieve premium pricing in target markets and reduce customer claims by over 90%.

Background

A well-established seafood exporter in Southeast Asia ships live and freshly harvested shellfish to markets across East Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. The company handles a range of premium products including mud crabs, lobsters, and high-grade oysters, where visual appearance at the point of sale directly commands pricing power. Export shipments endure multi-day refrigerated transit, during which packaging must maintain product integrity without restricting necessary airflow.

The Challenge

The exporter had been using generic woven sacks for both wholesale and retail shipments, which caused two significant problems. First, the coarse weave and lack of structural support led to shell damage and breakage during handling and transit, with an average damage rate of 8% per shipment. Second, the opaque packaging obscured the product from view, undermining the premium positioning the exporter sought in retail channels. International buyers in particular were demanding transparent, retail-ready packaging that allowed visual inspection without unpacking, while wholesale distributors needed robust bulk packaging that could withstand rough handling at distribution centers.

Our Approach

We developed a two-tier packaging strategy aligned with the exporter’s distribution channels. For retail and premium market shipments, we manufactured monofilament bags with a fine mesh structure that provides near-transparent visibility while offering enough structural rigidity to protect delicate shells from compression damage. The monofilament material resists saltwater corrosion and maintains its strength in the high-humidity environment of refrigerated shipping containers. For wholesale and bulk distribution, we supplied leno mesh bags with a wider open weave that maximizes airflow around the shellfish during transport, reducing mortality rates for live product. Both bag types were produced in custom sizes matched to the exporter’s standard product grades, with optional UV-stabilized drawstring closures for secure handling.

Results Delivered

Transit damage rates fell from 8% to just 1% within the first three months of deployment, representing a dramatic reduction in product loss and associated customer claims, which dropped by over 90%. The transparent monofilament retail packaging enabled the exporter to negotiate premium pricing in target markets, as buyers could verify product quality visually without opening the package. The leno mesh bulk bags extended live product shelf life during transit by approximately 20% thanks to improved airflow, further strengthening the exporter’s competitive position in time-sensitive overseas markets.
