Organic Produce Packaging with Mesh Bags

An Organic Farm Cooperative, Central America
Organic Produce Packaging with Mesh Bags

Challenge:

Finding breathable, brand-enhancing packaging for organic produce that meets both retail presentation standards and wholesale durability requirements.

Solution:

Custom-printed Raschel Mesh Bags for retail channels paired with Leno Mesh Bags for wholesale distribution, both optimized for airflow and brand visibility.

Result:

35% longer shelf life for retail produce, improved brand recognition across 6 supermarket chains, and a 25% increase in repeat orders.

Background

A cooperative of 14 organic farms in Central America was expanding from local farmers’ markets into supermarket chains and regional wholesale networks. The cooperative grew tomatoes, onions, avocados, and citrus fruits, packing approximately 80 metric tons of produce per month. Their existing burlap and generic plastic packaging failed to communicate their organic certification and brand identity.

As the cooperative entered higher-value retail channels, they needed packaging that preserved freshness while serving as a branding tool on store shelves.

The Challenge

Organic produce demands superior ventilation to prevent moisture buildup and premature ripening. The cooperative’s existing bags trapped humidity, leading to a 12% spoilage rate during the first 48 hours after harvest. In retail environments, their generic packaging made it impossible for consumers to distinguish their organic products from conventional alternatives on the same shelf.

For wholesale channels, the cooperative needed durable bulk packaging that could withstand stacking on pallets during 12-hour truck journeys across mountainous roads. Managing two separate packaging suppliers for retail and wholesale created procurement complexity and inconsistent delivery schedules.

Our Approach

We designed a dual-packaging strategy using two complementary products from our mesh bag range. For retail presentation, we supplied Raschel Mesh Bags with custom four-color printing featuring the cooperative’s logo, organic certification mark, and product variety information. These bags were sized at 2 kg and 5 kg configurations, ideal for supermarket shelf display. The knitted mesh construction maximized airflow while maintaining a clean, professional appearance.

For wholesale distribution, we provided Leno Mesh Bags in 25 kg and 50 kg sizes with woven label inserts. These bags offered superior tear resistance for the rigors of palletized transport while still allowing the breathability that organic produce requires. Both bag types shared a consistent color scheme, reinforcing brand identity across all channels.

We also conducted airflow testing at our facility to optimize mesh density for the cooperative’s specific crop mix, ensuring that each bag configuration delivered the right balance of ventilation and structural integrity.

Results Delivered

After switching to our mesh packaging solutions, the cooperative saw retail produce shelf life increase by 35%, with spoilage during the critical first 48 hours dropping from 12% to under 4%. Six supermarket chains across the region began stocking their products, citing the professional packaging presentation as a key factor in their buying decision.

Brand recognition surveys conducted at participating stores showed that 68% of regular shoppers could identify the cooperative’s products by packaging alone within three months. Repeat wholesale orders increased by 25% as distributors reported fewer damaged goods during transport. The cooperative consolidated to a single packaging supplier, reducing procurement administrative costs by an estimated 15%.
