Heavy-Duty Mining Ore Transport

A Mining Corporation, East Africa
Heavy-Duty Mining Ore Transport

Challenge:

Standard FIBC bags were rupturing under the abrasive weight of heavy mineral ores in extreme mining conditions, causing material loss and operational delays.

Solution:

We supplied UV-stabilized U-panel FIBCs rated for 2000kg safe working load alongside baffle bags engineered for stable stacking in exposed outdoor environments.

Result:

The operation handled over 50,000 tons of mineral ore with zero bag failures, achieving a 40% increase in bag lifespan compared to previous suppliers.

Background

A large-scale mining operation in East Africa processes thousands of tons of mineral ore each month, requiring bulk packaging that can withstand extreme outdoor conditions. The site operates in a region characterized by intense ultraviolet exposure, abrasive dust, and significant temperature fluctuations between day and night. Reliable bulk packaging is critical to maintaining continuous throughput from extraction through to transport.

The Challenge

The mining company had been sourcing standard woven polypropylene bags from multiple suppliers, but consistently experienced bag failures within weeks of deployment. The abrasive nature of the mineral ores, combined with UV degradation from prolonged sun exposure, caused seams to split and fabric to tear. Each bag failure resulted in costly material spillage, cleanup labor, and unplanned downtime. The client needed a packaging partner capable of delivering bags engineered specifically for the harsh realities of open-pit mining.

Our Approach

After conducting a thorough assessment of the client’s operational environment and material characteristics, we recommended a dual-product strategy. We supplied U-panel FIBCs constructed from high-tenacity polypropylene tape yarn with UV stabilizers rated for extended outdoor exposure, each certified to a 2000kg safe working load. For bulk storage and transport where stacking stability was essential, we provided baffle bags with internal polypropylene baffles that maintain a rectangular shape when filled, preventing dangerous stack shifting during storage and transit. Every bag underwent rigorous quality control testing including top-lift tests, UV resistance verification, and seam strength analysis before shipment.

Results Delivered

Over a twelve-month period, the mining operation transported more than 50,000 tons of mineral ore using our bags without recording a single bag failure. Bag lifespan increased by 40% compared to the previous supplier, reducing the frequency of replacement orders and associated logistics costs. The stable stacking behavior of the baffle bags also allowed the client to increase warehouse storage density by approximately 25%, freeing up valuable covered space on site.
